Through Dalmatia by van: tips for driving, ferries and parking

A van is the best way for a group to see Dalmatia, but the coast was not built for big vehicles. Here is what we have learned from guests who drive our vans from Split to Dubrovnik every summer.
Parking
- In Split use the car parks by Poljud or the Sukoišan garage; the old town is closed to traffic.
- In Trogir and Šibenik park at the edge of town and walk; the streets are too narrow.
- Check the height of underground garages: most vans are taller than 1.9 metres.
Ferries and islands
On the lines to Brač, Hvar and Korčula a van is charged as a vehicle over five metres. In July and August book your ticket in advance and arrive an hour before departure. Island roads are narrow but well maintained; just avoid gravel tracks to hidden coves.
Roads worth driving
- The Adriatic highway from Omiš to Makarska, with views of Brač and Biokovo.
- The road across Pelješac to Orebić, with wine roads along the way.
- The old road from Split to Sinj via Klis, for a view of the whole bay.
Small things that make the trip easier
Fill up before the ferry, as island petrol stations are fewer and pricier. For a cool full van, start earlier in the morning. And most importantly: keep the driver rested and let passengers take turns at the wheel if they are listed in the contract.
Pick up in Split, return in Dubrovnik
