Deposit, insurance and excess: what they mean and how they protect you

Most questions we get before a booking are about the deposit and insurance. Here is what those terms mean in practice.
Deposit
The deposit is an amount blocked on your card at pick-up. It is not a charge but a guarantee in case of damage, fines or missing fuel. When the car is returned undamaged the hold is released and your bank usually frees it within a few working days. The amount depends on the vehicle category and the insurance you choose.
Basic insurance and excess
Every one of our cars comes with basic damage and theft insurance. The excess is the maximum amount you pay if damage occurs. If the damage is lower than the excess you pay the actual damage; if it is higher you pay only the excess.
Additional insurance
Additional insurance reduces or completely removes the excess, and with it the deposit. It is worth it if you drive on unfamiliar roads, in big cities, or simply want peace of mind.
What insurance does not cover
- Damage caused under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Damage to tyres, wheels and the underbody from driving off paved roads.
- Loss of keys and vehicle documents.
- Parking fines and traffic offences.
All conditions are on the Rental terms page, and our staff will gladly explain every detail before you sign.
